Agbami Field: Supreme Court Ruling Hands 150,000BOPD To Famfa

The Nigerian Supreme Court ruling on Famfa Petroleum’s stake in the Oil Mining Lease (OML 127) simply affirms the pronouncement of the lower courts with which industry watchers are familiar, if not in respect of the implications for the parties and the country but in terms of defining the “winner” and the “loser”.

With the judgement, Famfa’s  entitlement to lift 150,000BOPD, or 60% of the 250,000BOPD production from Agbami is now a done deal.  This is huge. To put it in context, the volume  is around 6% of Nigeria’s 2.5MMBOPD, and clearly a higher volume than (the French Major) TOTAL’s entire equity production in shallow water Nigeria. Yet TOTAL operates four Nigerian offshore acreages and is the fourth largest producer of Nigerian crude.

Encon Pulls Out Of The Captive Power Market

The country’s top private electricity producer is staking its immediate future on two 144MW gas fired plants, each to be located in the west and east of the country. The first of the two plants, under construction at the company’s own site in Ikorodu, near Lagos, is for supply to the national grid. The second is to be sited at the Onne Oil and Gas Zone in Rivers State, in the east of the country. Encon hopes to begin construction of the Onne Plant by mid- 2013. The plant is as a result of the company winning the bid for 25 years power supply concession with the Nigerian Ports Authority(NPA), Federal Ministry of Transport.

Petrofac Moves In On West Africa

Petrofac  is hoping to get as much of a market share in West African operations as it already has in North Africa. It is ready to spend money to finance oilfield development and has invested capital in infrastructure projects in the Gulf Of Guinea area. But it is also promising to back new asset development and discussing partnerships with government owned companies in the region, notably Nigeria.

The UK listed oilfield service company won a total of $3.4Billion worth of EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contracts for a gas processing facility(El-Merk) and gas-field development(In Salah) project in Algeria between March 2009 and January 2011. In neighbouring Tunisia, its first foothold on the continent, Petrofac has had a presence for six years, executing a variety of conceptual/FEED work for the country’s developments as well as executing a major EPC project (Hasdrubal gas plant) and has ongoing operations at the Chergui gas field concession on the island of Kerkennah.

With 181,000BOPD (Net), China Becomes The Fifth Largest Producer in Nigeria

China’s state owned companies: CNOOC and Sinopec, have focused largely on buying producing assets, rather than participating in bid rounds in Nigeria.

The take- over of TOTAL’s 20% stake in OML 138, helps China Inc. to entrench itself as a major producer of hydrocarbon liquids in Africa’s largest oil producing jurisdiction.

With the 28,000BOPD added by the latest transaction, China’s net production in the country becomes 181,000BOPD, trailing only that of Shell, ExxonMobil, Chevron and TOTAL. The Chinese government is a bigger producer in Nigeria than ENI, the Italian major. This is how it happened:
